Diagnostic Testing
Diagnostic testing helps determine the nature of your pet's
disease. Our veterinarians will recommend any number of tests based upon
the age, physical exam and medical history of your pet.
Blood Chemistry helps to
identify disease-related proteins and enzymes such as Albumin, Amylase and
Alkaline Phosphatase which can indicate intestinal, pancreatic or liver
disease, respectively. Blood testing can also detect Blood Urea Nitrogen
and elevated levels of Calcium, Cholesterol, Blood Glucose, Creatinine and
Phosphorus. Diseases such as diabetes and certain infections and tumors can
also be detected by taking a closer look at your pet's Blood Chemistry.
Electrolytes (Sodium, Potassium
and Chloride), in proper balance, are vital to
your pet's health. Electrolyte tests are important in evaluating life
threatening conditions such as vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration and cardiac
(heart) symptoms.
Hematology provides crucial
information about the structure and function of your pet's blood. Our
veterinarians may suggest a Hematocrit, Complete Blood Count or a
Morphologic Inspection to determine the presence of abnormalities ranging
from anemia to leukemia.
Urinalysis focuses on the
by-products of many vital organs, which can be found in your pet's urine.
Our veterinarians can diagnose diabetes, liver and kidney disease through
this type of testing.
An Electrocardiogram detects
heart rate and electrical rhythm. Any abnormalities can be a risk to pets
undergoing anesthesia. Our veterinarians may suggest this diagnostic test,
especially if your pet faces surgery.
A Serum Thyroid Hormone test
measures the level of thyroid hormone circulating in your pet's blood.
Hyperthyroidism occurs primarily in adult to geriatric-aged cats. Once
again, our veterinarians may suggest this test if your pet faces surgery, as
unrecognized Hyperthyroidism can cause serious complications to pets placed
under anesthesia.
The first step of proper treatment is the correct diagnosis.
At
